Yesterday the Amarillo voters sent a strong message in support of downtown design standards as 70% voted AGAINST the repeal. We are delighted that the efforts of Keep Amarillo Strong have culminated in this victory for the downtown neighborhood and the greater city at large.
We humbly thank all of our supporters and ask for your continued assistance as we move together toward a better and brighter future.

88% of Residents in Urban Design Zone favor of Design Standards
In March 2011, Keep Amarillo Strong (KAS) was formed from the grass‐roots efforts of downtown residents to keep the Downtown Urban Design Standards in place. As part of these efforts, Keep Amarillo Strong has walked door-to-door visiting with residential property owners to gauge where the neighborhood stood as a whole on this issue. Although KAS expected strong support based on the November City Commission Meeting, the results illustrated in this map even surprised us. Of the 161 property owners that were contacted or signed a petition, 88% are in favor of Design Standards (141 “For” and only 21 “Against.”) These facts speak for themselves. The residents of the Downtown Urban Design District want the Urban Design Standards to remain in place - not to be repealed.
On May 14th, you as a registered voter and citizen of Amarillo are being asked to decide the fate of our Design Standards. We respectfully call upon our friends and neighbors in Amarillo to help us retain these important Design Standards by voting AGAINST the Repeal of the Urban Design Standards. In addition, we also feel that Amarillo is not a City where a small group can circumvent the resolve of the majority of downtown residents just because they don’t agree with the outcome.
The wording on the ballot is tricky, so please read it carefully and vote against the repeal. We, the neighbors of downtown Amarillo, sincerely appreciate your help.

Ballot Language
One thing that could be confusing to voters come May 14th is the language of the ballot. The ballot will read:
DOWNTOWN DESIGN STANDARDS
To repeal the ordinance which enacted certain Downtown Urban Design Standards and established various procedures relating thereto, enacted on August 16, 2010, being Ordinance No. 7223
[ ] FOR
[ X ] AGAINST
Remember to carefully read the referendum and vote AGAINST.
